Deaf woman sues hospital: no interpreter for her, either

Lisa Monique Webb of Los Angeles has sued the St. Francis Medical Center in suburban Lynwood for not having an interpreter for her. "The absence of a sign language interpreter made Webb's Caesarean section and subsequent stay at the hospital in December 2003 a fearful and frustrating experience because she did not understand what was happening to her or her newborn daughter," reported the San Jose Mercury News. The Western Law Center for Disability Rights is representing Webb.

There is an interesting discussion thread on the subject sign language being offered to medical students.
That discussion is over at the BBC Ouch!talk messageboard.
