Oakwood Staffer Charged with Abuse of Resident

The troubled Oakwood institution in Kentucky is in the news again, less than two weeks after the state agreed to keep it open despite federal charges of abuse and neglect. Staffer Misty A. Calhoun, 24, was charged Wednesday with "misdemeanor assault" for reportedly "dragging a male resident across the floor and kicking him in the back," according to a story in Saturday's Courier-Journal.

The institution houses over 300 people labeled as having developmental disabilities. Two previous abuse charges, says the newspaper, "involved accidental deaths of residents.

"The federal government provides about half the $54 million a year it costs to run Oakwood."
