Don't nobody rain on his Parade

John Hockenberry, my fav crip reporter of all times, had the cover story in the July 24 Parade magazine. It's just become available online and you can read it here.
John does such wonderful acrobats in our minds that I always come away marvelling. What I like so much about this piece is how he shows that everybody benefits from access:

Those ladies with their strollers have me to thank for the sidewalk ramps they love. And do you think that young office workers in the gym realize that it is the deaf they have to thank for the captions on the TV screens that allow them to follow their stocks while they huff and puff? Having a place for all is both the American dream and the engine of our success.

The "ladies with the strollers" belong to a story he tells about a rather hairy NYC subway trip, so don't be in a hurry; click the link and read the Parade article. Or, if you get Parade in your Sunday paper, go dig it out from under the cat litter and read it.
Blog housekeeping: I think that I've jiggered things so that any of you can post a comment; you don't have to sign in first. I think. And I think the comments will appear right on the same page as the blog. At least in some browsers.

COMMENT-BODY:An RSS feed that people can add to their news readers would make it easier to find out when your blog is updated, and would probably increase your readership. I'm pretty sure that Blogger has an option for RSS feeds.

COMMENT-BODY:Hey, Mary!

I'm a Hockenberry fan, too. It's amazing that someone can be so "mainstream" in terms of his media career, and still maintain his radical edge. He's gone out on a ledge more than once hammering his colleagues in the press for their failures in covering disability issues.

COMMENT-BODY:Congratulations on the launch of your blog!

I agree, it would be a great addition to the blogosphere to have your work syndicated through RSS. It is a Blogger Pro feature only. If your account is non-Pro, Blogger suggests that you try FeedBurner.

That's the thing. Interfaces are different, feeds are different....
I'm gonna work on the techie stuff this weekend. Thanks to everybody who offers suggestions. Feedburner is next.

COMMENT-BODY:So, Mary, are you going to add a "trackback" feature to keep track of the number of blogs that link to your items?

(I am really great at thinking of neat things *other* people can do.)

The comments link uses a Javascript window.open(), which creates a new browser window. I'm pretty sure that behaviour will be consistent across browsers. Here's a good reference, if you want to do some more investigation: http://www.mozilla.org/docs/dom/domref/dom_window_ref76.html.
