YOUR LETTERS TO US...
ABOUT
Laura Hershey's Disabled woman's lawsuit exposes prejudices

As one of the two attorneys who represented Kijuana Chambers in this case, I thank Laura Hershey for giving voice in this article to how all of us with disabilities who were present at the trial feel about this most unfortunate verdict. In essence, it appears (at least according to one jury) that blatant discrimination will not be sufficient to establish liability under the federal civil rights statutes that protect us.

We are, of course, investigating avenues of appeal, but I feel the need to remind those who say a case like this should never have been brought that we must start somewhere. If we do not have a right to access the services we may need to become parents, what rights do we have? It took over 60 years for us to overturn the doctrine of "separate but equal" in the race context, a doctrine once sanctioned by the United States Supreme Court.

Kevin W. Williams, Legal Program Director, Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition, Littleton, CO
