In Memoriam: Christopher Reeve

by Stephen Kuusisto

Last night William Blake died
According to the laws of wish:

He was singing with friends.
Wait -- it gets better --

Today was his birthday!
The song was one he wrote:

Mutual forgiveness of each vice,
Such are the gates of paradise.

Now the circus can begin.
Now reporters can forget

Innocence, knowledge, risk
And more risk ... ...

Poet Stephen Kuusisto's most recent book is Only Bread, Only Light. He teaches in the graduate creative writing program at Ohio State University in Columbus.
